Umbral Visions contains two stories and is a must read for anyone who wants to be scared to death.
The first story is The Key Ring. The terror begins on page one and continues long after the book is finished. I was immediately immersed into the story, trapped in the nightmare along with the main characters. I searched for a way to exit, but could only follow after them, hoping that they would lead me out. I experienced the pain and anquish firsthand. I was lead through a maze of unspeakable horror. The experience will stay with me for a very long time.
The second story, The Shadow, was not as terrifying, thank God. It was more of a supernatural murder mystery. Once again, I became part of the story, wondering who might be in danger next. The characters were genuine and I felt compassion for their predicament. The ending caught me totally off guard.
I can't wait to read more of Mr. Calcaterra's works. I highly recommend Umbral Visions.
