For those who are delving into the complex world of medieval marriage for the first time, Duby's book is certainly a good starting point. In fact, if one was to read any later publications on the topic, Duby's name would likely be mentioned plenty of times. Later historians' arguments on marriage are often based around their agreement, or often disagreement, with Duby's suggestion that lay and ecclesiastical models were in conflict.
Overall, the examples he provides of the marriages of the early Capetian kings are fitting evidence for his thesis. It is a worthy read when it comes to comprehending the changing nature of marriage during the high middle ages. However, I would suggest that it is read alongside other historians, such as Christopher Brooke and David D'Avray for a more thorough understanding.
