The Tea Drinker's Handbook
After drinking and enjoying all your Pu Er's and Da Hong Pao's for years I figured I wanted to dig a bit deeper so I got this book. And for that purpose it's a good choice. The information is not too specific, but it gives you the basics about the history, the chemistry, the diversity and the techniques. It describes where the different teas are grown and how they are processed, what makes a black tea black and why it tastes the way it tastes. It lists the "50 famous teas" with detailed descriptions on each one which is useful when dealing with a know-it-all salesman at your local tea shop.
All in all the book does its job and does it well but it's not revelatory. The layout is quite plain and boring and the text is Wikipedia-style. I later came across the book "Tea Sommelier" from the same authors and it seems to give more or less the same information, but does it in a more engaging and fun manner, with tons of great illustrations and step-by-step guides.
So if you're looking to get one book on tea, you should probably get "Tea Somellier" instead.
