The epic hero is a symbolic figure who personifies the traits and values held by a particular culture, but is also universal in nature; famous epic heroes range from Odysseus, Gilgamesh, and Beowulf to modern popular culture figures such as Luke Skywalker and Frodo Baggins. During the epic quest the hero faces extreme adversity and eventually becomes a significantly altered figure, having learned much about his own nature and gaining a truer understanding of the world he inhabits. Those with an interest in comparative religion, history, philosophy, and mythology should find this book intriguing, and fans of Joseph Campbell will find much of interest here.
