The Disciplinary Revolution: Calvinism and the Rise of the State in Early Modern Europe

An insightful overview of the rise of Calvinism and its effect on culture and politics in Eastern Europe. Gorski traces the roots of capitalism, embedded in Max Weber's criteria of acquisition, reinvestment, and savings. Brandenburg-Prussia turns out to be a very interesting case study of royal austerity measures and the effect of a "self-monitoring" state.
