Second Fiddle: Or How to Tell a Blackbird from a Sausage Book

Aspiring writer Mags Clarke has just moved with her mother to a new area after the death of her father. While trudging through the woods behind her new house, she stumbles across a girl practicing the violin. Though they're cautious at first, Mags and Gillian become friends when Mags convinces Gillian to embark on Project Manhunt: the ambitious plan to help Gillian find her absent father in order to travel to England for an audition to a prestigious music school. They're an unlikely pair, and the road to real friendship isn't easy with such an exuberant character as Mags trying to run the show.
