A Yuletide variation of the Goldilocks story twists the roles of humans and animals to bring in some fun holiday cheer! The jolly man's wife and her helpers are all set for a surprise party. They just need to get a tree, but in their haste to leave, the cotage door is left ajar. Meanwhile, three cold, tired and lost polar bears are attracted to the warmth and delicious smells. They wreak havoc with the decorations and baby bear stuffs himself with goodies. Exhausted by their revels they fall asleep in the bedroom where they are later discovered by the jolly man's wife. She is not pleased and makes the bears atone for their behavior by cleaning, baking, and decorating. They party begins and a good time is had by all. Readers will join the fun and holiday cheer through delightful bear antics and charming and expressive illustrations. 2000, Caroline House/Boyds Mills, Ages 4 to 10, $15.95. Reviewer: Laura Hummel
