Salt and Pepper may look like twins, but in all other ways, they're nothing alike. Salt is a wild guy with messy fur and bad manners. Pepper is a little lady, obedient and sweet. Then one day at the Pike Place Market, the crowd gets thick, the fish are flying, and two little dogs accidentally get switched, ending up with the wrong owners. Now what? After the switcharoo, the two spend a wild morning trying to figure out what's expected of them, while their owners are unaware they have the wrong dog. Children will delight in knowing this secret until another bout of confusion mixes everything up again, happily reuniting the dogs with their favorite people.

Sue Stefurak - Children's Literature

Everyone goes to Pike Place Market to see what makes Seattle, Seattle. Losi captures the spirit of the market with its many stalls of fresh fruit and flowers and its multi-tiers of funky shops in this light-hearted tale of look-alike dogs. One dog is from a houseboat, the other from a penthouse, so their treats are vastly different: one likes smoked mussels, the other, old shoes. As fish are flying and people are watching, the dogs get switched accidentally. Their owners drag Salt and Pepper to their "favorite" shops, but the dogs long to return to their real homes. Amy Meissner's detailed illustrations bring to life the lively ambience of the famous market, complete with its bronze pig and Magic Shop and jars with free samples of honey. 2004, WestWinds Press, Ages 4 up.
