This is the first report on confidential enquiries into maternal deaths that combines information for the whole of the United Kingdom. It covers 265 reported cases and shows that the commonest causes of maternal death were thromboembolism and hypertensive disorders and that there was a reduction in the number of deaths directly attributable to anaesthesia. The report concludes that in many cases maternal deaths reflect deficiencies in the maternity services available.
