To contrast with some of the other reviews I'd like to say that I'm a beginning freelancer, in fact I'm "pre-beginner" (I'm only just starting to seriously consider it), and I think that this is a really good book for beginners. This was the first book I've read on the subject and I feel like it paints a pretty realistic view of what freelancing is like in the real world, and that I've probably saved myself reading a lot of wrong advice (of which there seems to be a lot in the world) on what it's like to work as a freelance writer.
There's no sugar coating here and if what you're needing is the type of book which will give you a pat on the back and tell you "you can do it and everything will be wonderful", then this book is probably going to scare you away from the whole idea of being a freelance writer. Myself, I like to know what I'm letting myself into so that I can properly mentally prepare myself for it. I felt that this book gave me that, and additionally let me into some good tips on how to deal with the aggravating parts of the job.
Whether or not the tips are "rule-breaking", I don't know because this is the first introduction that I've had to the "rules", but as far as I can see that's the best position to be in.
