Although the quest for growth remains as elusive as it was more than a decade ago, there is now much greater consensus on the policies and institutional changes that are needed to foster growth and economic development. Fascinating look at the way the SED appropriated money/monetary policy as an attempt to move their socialist politics forward, leading ultimately (and somewhat paradoxically) to the union of the two Germanys. I had no idea how often Honecker made concessions that were in direct contradiction to the Marxist-Leninist socialism of the SED in order to get hard currency from the FRG. Very strange. Also, just, everything was ... surprising. Some chapters were stronger than others, and I particularly liked the epilogue.
