Focusing on characters and stories rather than technical specifications (though much of that is covered as well), this set organizes US automobile history into four volumes: the big three (Ford, GM, and Chrysler); the small independents, such as Ransom Olds, Fred and August Duesenberg, and Charles Nash; the financial wizards (covering visionaries such as John Willys and Albert Pope); and the design innovators, offering a behind-the-scenes look at great innovators and their inventions--from Andrew Riker, president of the Riker Electric Motor Company in 1888, to Thomas J. and Thomas L. Sturtevant who created the automatic transmission. Numerous b&w photographs are included throughout the volumes.
