The front cover, a photograph of the BB Lutz family, embodies the spirit of the early Illinois pioneers. Each member of this particular extended family farmed, lived near each other, married and raised their families and died in west-central Illinois. The harshness of this life and times is noted in the fact that BB Lutzâ??s wife, Luella Brice was married when she was 17 years old, had 9 children in 17 years, and died at 46 years old.

Life in rural America has changed a good deal since these times. This book and the accompanying writings of our ancestors, in particular John Henry Lutz, should offer a glimpse of life as it was in those days. Take note that one 2- year-old boy died during the trip from Virginia to Illinois in 1854. Another 2-year-old boy arrived in Illinois quite ill and could easily have died as well. This little boy was Benjamin B Lutz.

Modern farming and agriculture have improved a great deal in these past 150+ years since our ancestors trekked across America in covered wagons and plowed the land with mules. This book and their writings are offered to their indomitable spirit and memory.
