Painting Boats and Harbors Book

An informative and comprehensive guide to acrylic painting.

The book is divided into six parts looking at: (1) Acrylic Materials; (2) Acrylic Color (or Colour); (3) Watermedia Techniques; (4) Easel Painting Techniques; (5) Innovative Approaches; & (6) Integrating Other Media. There are ample examples along the way so the reader ends up with an awareness of the vast scope of acrylic painting. There are practical exercises suggested at the end of each chapter to further extend your knowledge.

This book was helpful for me, explaining some of the basic stuff such as different types of paints & materials to paint on, as well as how to prepare the painting surface. The chapter on colour was particularly eye-opening as I know very little colour theory and it is clear that Stephen Quiller is very knowledgeable on the subject. I can't think of anything not touched upon in this book (e.g. there's a bit on murals & collages).

I can see this being a very useful first reference book to acrylic painting. Perhaps later on, I'll want to read about some of the stuff mentioned in greater detail & depth, as well as seeing how other artists use acrylics in their own ways. But for the time being there's enough to be getting on with.

Highly recommended for somebody wanting to understand and become skilled in acrylic painting.
