This America's Award Honor book for 2010 is written by Diego Rivera's daughter, Guadalupe. I love the photograph of Diego and Guadalupe on the inside title page! The book is written in both English and Spanish. She provides a short introduction to the book where she talks about how her father loved children and wanted them all to be "cared for, educated, and encouraged." This certainly showed a new side to Diego Rivera! Each page includes a full size painting of Diego Rivera's that includes a child in the painting. Then, Guadalupe tells the story of the painting and relates it to her life with Diego. I absolutely loved this format. Viewing Diego's gorgeous works of art and then hearing stories behind them, as well as stories about his daughter's life, was extremely engaging. I think this would be a great book to use in grades K-4 during an art unit. It would be a wonderful tie in to learn about Diego Rivera and have students create works of art that have a biographical story behind them.
