Essays. Poetics. Translated from the French by Gilbert Alter-Gilbert. MANIFESTOS MANIFEST contains Vicente Huidobro's autobiographical reassessments of his writing, and was first published in French in 1925, the year he returned to his native Chile to become the editor of a newspaper, and later to run for president. Friend of Guillaume Apollinaire, Pierre Reverdy, Juan Larrea and Jorge Luis Borges, Huidobro was himself one of the great poets of the 20th century. His manifestos, which crystallized his poetics of Creationism, are found here including Futurism and Machinism, Manifesto Mayhaps, The Poetry of Madmen, Tourist Advisory, and The Seven Oaths of the Poet, as well as Manifestos Manifest and Creationism.

Me gustan mucho los últimos textos. No entiendo por qué odia tanto a Marinetti y al futurismo, en lo personal creo que el futurismo no se proponÃa en ningún momento ser novedad ni ser una búsqueda de lo nuevo, tampoco creo que el futurismo se redujera a la temática bélica o de las máquinas; es decir, no creo que el asunto bélico en el arte y poesÃa futurista fuera sólo un asunto temático. Tampoco entiendo mucho el desprecio hacia el surrealismo. Fuera de eso y de la idea del poeta como "dios", todo me gusta. Tampoco estoy muy de acuerdo con sus ideas del creacionismo, pero fuera de sus teorÃas del arte, todo lo demás me encanta.
Este fragmento donde critica a la máquina como tema me ha parecido bien bello, sobretodo por la época en que vivo. Siempre he creÃdo que el asunto con la máquina (y la tecnologÃa en general) no es sólo un asunto 'de tema' y Huidobro lo ha dejado clarÃsimo aquÃ: "Los poetas que creen que porque las máquinas son modernas, también serán modernos al cantarlas, se equivocan absolutamente"; creo que de alguna manera no hay que "cantarle" a la máquina sino ser la máquina, siguiendo (y apropiándome) un poco este fragmento de él también: "Esta idea de artista como creador [...] me la sugirió un viejo poeta indÃgena de Sudamérica (aymara) que dijo: 'El poeta es un dios; no cantes la lluvia, poeta, haz llover'".
