This book is based on the Lancashire legend of Mabs Cross, Wigan. Dating back to the thirteenth century, Lady Mabel and her descendants have fascinated researchers for over 700 years. Through these four stories, you can follow Mabel on her journey throughout the centuries. After more than seven years of absence, Sir William returns to Haigh Hall to find Mabel had married a Welsh knight, believing her husband to be dead. In a state of fury, Sir William chased the knight to Newton Le Willows and killed him. For her act of bigamy, Mabel was forced to walk barefoot from the Hall to a stone cross on the highway to Wigan. The cross became know as Mabel's Cross (Mabs Cross). Follow her spirit on her journey of penance throughout the ages, from the 1300s, the rebuilding of the Hall in the 1800s, and up to the present day. And if you're passing through Wigan and you see a white figure on Wigan Lane, don't be too surprised.
