Introduces, in brief text and illustrations, the use of the letter combination "ink" in such words as "drink," "pink," "shrink," and "wink."

Susan Borges - Children's Literature

This small text is a study of words that end with the letters ink. Designed for beginning readers, it is part of a comprehensive collection of books created by reading specialists and educators for use in early literacy instruction. The Sandcastle logo on the upper right hand of the cover indicates that it is Level 2 which is for beginning readers. Bright, colorful photographs accompany the large print text on each page of this book. The first page of the book is a picture dictionary that contains the targeted words in the —ink word family, such as drink and pink. The first few pages of the book have one sentence containing an —ink word with a photograph that illustrates the text. Then there is a mini story with high quality, close-up photographs about a shrinking giant skink. At the end of the book is a small glossary of the lesser known —ink words such as link and skink. Young readers will be able to read this engaging and simple book independently because of the excellent picture clues and the repetitive text. Particularly if used as part of the Sandcastle series, which is designed to systematically teach letter combinations and their sounds, young readers in and out of the classroom will learn vocabulary, text comprehension, and fluency. 2003, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 3 to 7.
