Extensively illustrated with color photos, this course is more detailed than most, depicting such things as chord fingerings with both diagrams and photographs. It also covers music theory more extensively than most other titles reviewed here, though it introduces concepts such as intervals and inverted triads late in the volume in favor of getting the beginning musician playing as soon as possible. It names and describes the working parts of the instrument but does not, unlike some series, include a buyer's guide. The foldouts on the covers that allow the book to stand upright are a nice touch.
