In those houses which are strictly double houses--that is, where the hall is in the middle--the fireplaces usually are on opposite sides; so that while one member of the household is warming himself at a fire built into a recess of the north wall, say another member, the former's own brother, perhaps, may be holding his feet to the blaze before a hearth in the south wall--the two thus fairly sitting back to back. But very probably this style of chimney building originated with some architect afflicted with a quarrelsome family.

- قصة قصيرة غارقة ÙÙŠ الرمزية وموجهة Ù„Ùئة معينة من الناس اي المختصين بموضوع رمزيتها وهم الأمريكيين ÙÙŠ ذلك الوقت.
- بظاهرها شيخ ÙÙŠ خري٠عمره يداÙع عن مدخنته بوجه زوجته وبناته اللواتي يردن تغيير تصميم المنزل واقتلاع المدخنة التي تأخذ معظم المساØØ©ØŒ وهي بهذا الظاهر قصة سخيÙØ© جداً.
- ببطانها هي صراع بين التقليد والتجديد، واذا اعتبرنا ان المدخنة تشكل صلب الإتØاد بين الولايات الأمريكية بدليل تمددها الى كاÙØ© الغر٠(المواسير)ØŒ Ùتكون القصة سياسية وضرورة المØاÙظة على هذا الإتØاد. كما ان وضع المرأة وبناتها ÙÙŠ مواجهة / معارضة زوجها (وأبوهم) قد يكون رمزية للصراع بين الجنسين ÙÙŠ الوصول للسلطة واتخاذ القرارات بشكل متساوÙ!
