Whatever I did, Goose did.
Whatever Goose did, Duck did.
When I sat down, Goose sat down.
Duck sat down too.

What's a little boy to do when a goose and a duck think that he's their mother? Especially when they follow him around, doing everything he does!

Newbery Medal winner Jean Craighead George's comic story and Priscilla Lamont's lively art make for a silly tale about boys, geese, ducks, and the rhythms of nature.

Children's Literature

A young boy finds an egg just as it is hatching by the lake. It is a little goose and it immediately thinks that the boy is its mother. The goose copies everything the boy does—eats when he eats, sleeps when he sleeps, and jumps around whenever he does. Not too long after, the boy and his goose find a duck egg, and it too hatches, producing a duck that imprints on goose, thinking that goose is its mother. The trio has great fun as the delightful pictures show—each sleeping in its own bed in the boy's bedroom. The two decide to look for their real mothers, somehow get caught by the police, and are finally rescued by the boy. In the fall, when the geese and ducks migrate, the two creatures finally figure out who they are and join their flocks. The boy is not sad at all, because the two creatures he cared for are back where they belong. The story is amusing, and the illustrations are a delight—from the trio mimicking each others' moves to the havoc the two birds cause in the police station. Kids may want to know more about imprinting and why a goose or a duck would think that a species other than their own could be its parent. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
