Een overzicht en geschiedenis van klassieke muziek in de negentiende eeuw van Beethoven tot de eerste werken van Mahler. Met hier en daar aardige historische achtergronden en veel gedetailleerde analyses van stukken. Helaas ook erg onevenwichtig (24 pagina's Brahms vs. 6 summiere voor Bruckner), incompleet (Délibes wordt niet eens vermeld) en soms wat zeurderig (van vele componisten wordt het niet-vernieuwende benadrukt).
