River Song was an interesting book about a Maori girl, Jessye, from New Zealand. She has a wonderful relationship with her grandmother whom she calls Nana. She lives with Nana and sees her mother every once in awhile. Jessye has stability in her life because of Nana. Her mother brings turmoil and trouble - but she still loves her. Jessye's father is not around.Just when Jessye starts to think her mother has changed, she reverts to the childish, irresponsible, and disruptive ways that Jessye knows so well. Living by the river with her Nana, she feels safe. But there's a rumor of a taniwha or a sea creature living in the river with unfinished business concerning Jessye's family. Jessye must learn to stand up for herself and make good decisions even when it would be easier to make bad ones.
