The romantic side of Henry James, revealed through his letters to young male friends
If you have ever wanted to see a genius in love, read these letters. You'll find that novelist Henry James, famous for his critical scrutiny and blind devotion, suffered like the rest of us, whether from the torture of separation or the self-doubt provoked by an unanswered letter. This volume collects James' letters to three men to whom he devoted himself in his later years. All of the letters evince his eager interest in their careers and fortunes, and express, as a whole, his deep (often neurotic) desire to maintain a connection to youth. Focusing on the much-discussed question of James' sexuality, the editors argue that while the letters do not finally answer whether James was gay, they show him to have been intensely aware of how erotically charged and deeply felt same-sex affection could be.
