This book is principally about the fighter aircraft of WWII and what they were like to fly. Ron Collis joined the RAF in 1940 when he was 19. He first trained as a flying instructor but became a Spitfire pilot in 1943.
After a most interesting year during which he was awarded the DFC and mention in Despatches, he joined the Central Fighter Establishment where he served in the Fighter Leaders' School, the Enemy Aircraft Flight and the Meteor Flight. This gave him the opportunity to fly an unusually wide range of advanced fighters.
His experiences with all of these fighters make a fascinating story.
About the Author
Ron Collis joined the RAF in 1940 at the age of 19. He left in 1947 as a Squadron Leader having been awarded the D.F.C. and Mentioned in Despatches as a fighter pilot. He graduated from Oxford University and later served in the Royal Navy as a meteorologist.
In 1956 he started a career in applied research, first at Decca Radar in London and then at Stanford Research Institute (later SRI International) in California, where he became Director of the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory.

This book takes a humorous look at the every day challenges and inner thoughts that a woman goes through every day, and yet is ashamed to admit it..... Until she finally realizes at the age of forty that every woman goes through the same challenges. The author takes an unusual yet fun approach to her different roles in life; each role having their own character. The "Good Mother," the "Good Wife," and then there's the "True Self" character...... The one we all wish we could be all the time. The book's format is that of a daily diary. Most of the entries conclude in some sort of life lesson. One example is her entry in which she lectures the character "Black Collie," that he is going to have to mend his ways. But it seems the more intense this lecture is, the harder "Black Collie's" tail will wag. She concludes that no matter how chaotic life is, his tail still wags....he is happy in spite of the world around him.
It's a quick and easy read and allows you to misplace the book in a large pile of magazines and other clutter for a while and yet pick up where you left off after you have finally found it again. A fun book to give to any woman for her 40th birthday, or just read and pass on the a friend.
