Tracing each story from its original appearance to Carleton's last revisions, this book discusses his alterations and their relationship to the writer's changing attitudes and skills and to the literary climate in which he wrote. Some of his most startling alterations concern passages removed or rewritten to avoid offending the current religious views of his market.
