This book is an anthology of some forty essays, both written and photographic, which developed in response to a symposium and exhibition held by the Netherlands Architecture Institute in late 1998. Its aim was nothing less than a conceptual mapping in both architectural and non-architectural terms of South Africa. Featured are contributions by prominent thinkers and practitioners in the fields of architecture, urban planning, history, politics, demographics, sociology, gender studies, philosophy, art criticism, and journalism. Together they attempt to describe a nexus of architectural and political issues in South Africa: questions of community, homeland, environment, power and race.
