In the decade since the publication of the second edition of the Atlas of Landforms, humankind has continued to witness a period of intense geographic and geologic exploration and investigation of Earth and the planets. The study of Earth remains of great importance to each and every person because of the real and potential deterioration of our planet's physical environment and the continuing depletion of its mineral and biologic resources. Knowledge of landforms and the basic processes governing their formation is vital to a better understanding of Earth and to the proper management and development of its resources. In general, the philosophy of the first two editions of the atlas has been retained in this edition. Each chapter in this new edition has been fully revised, and a new chapter has been added entitled "Introduction to the Study of Landforms". The purpose of this introductory chapter is to provide the reader with background information to enable the most effective use of the various maps and photographs presented in the atlas. Several chapters have been expanded, and new map sheets and photographs from the United States, Canada and elsewhere have been included to illustrate better and more completely certain landforms. The goal throughout has been to improve the portrayal of landforms whilst maintaining a quality atlas.
