All the nineteen stories in this collection are true. There is, among many others, the extraordinary tale about a lion that was trapped for three days in the Birmingham sewers, and the story of Billy, the Little Military Learned Horse; there are the stories about Harry the sea-gull who forgot how to fly, and that of Nyana the gorilla who wanted to be a person, and who walked and worked, and helped in the kitchen, like a man. The author is herself an animal lover, and some of the birds and animals she writes about have lived with her in her home.
