"This plain, homespun book, over 30 years in the making, is the first illustrated glossary ever published that describes terms used in the decoration of American and European antiques during the late 17th, the 18th, the 19th, and the early 20th centuries. It contains 872 sketches, a 444-word vocabulary, and references to 262 persons. It includes information on the decoration of glass, leather, metal, papier-mache' and wood; data on clocks, looking glasses and furniture; and word sketches of painters, craftsmen, inventors and inventions, tinsmiths and tin centers, manufacturers and manufactories. It concludes with an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive 34-page index. The author and illustrator, Maryjane Clark, is a noted teacher and a master craftsman. She has been actively engaged in teaching, research, lecturing, writing, decorating, restoring and exhibiting. She has been Chairman of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration Teachers' Certification Committee, and was the Chairman of its Standards and Judging Committee, which is responsible for the high quality the Society is ever anxious to maintain."
