Amazing grace Book

This is a positively delightful book of poetry by Jane Yolen, complimented with charming dreamlike illustrations from Ruth Tietjen Councell. As the title suggests, the poems are about the moon and are written from the perspective of a young Yolen over the span of a decade. I really like the backstory she included as an intro- when she was very young, she lived in New York, in the back room of a house where her only view was of a brick wall. Then her family moved to the country and her new room afforded her a view of the moon. Just as the moon comforts us and is a source of wonder as children, so too does the moon console and fascinate Jane. She captures her vivid imagination in various verses and styles of poems, letting us play with the moon as she did.

There was nothing about this book I didn't like. The way the poems are written reminds adult readers of what it is like to imagine like a child. For young readers, this book inspires written words from musings.

Here's a verse I really liked, from Old Woman Who Never Dies-
She will whisper to you
With the little voices of the night.
Swee-swash sings the grass.
Cree-up sings the frogs.
Lip-lap sings the water.
Pick-buss sings the tiny wings
of the thousand thousand
Brothers of the air.
