Against Transgression
A gay reference book. As far as I understand, the original title is a reference to Sartre's lecture "Reflections on the Jewish Question".
The book is composed of four main parts:
1) Daily practices and adverse consequences of homophobic insult
2) Contextualizing homophobia concerning the cases of Oscar Wilde and Andre Gide and Marcel Proust (the moderns and their sometimes opposing attempts to formulate homosexuality). This part is very accessible. Some ideas (which I may summarize as "the impossibility of homophobia" since each homophobic disclosure works for the representation and visibility of the homosexuals is mind-blowing)
3) Foucault and how he deals with/suffers from his homosexuality and how he uses his homosexuality as a tool to shape his theory, e.g. focusing on sanity (reason) vs. madness (unreason).
4) Hannah Arendt and using her theory of Jewishness to understand gayness.
I loved the book, although it took months to finish it.
It contains some inspiring insights and lots of historical information.
