Richard Long belongs to a generation of artists who from the mid-sixties helped to re-define the boundaries of art practice. By making his work simply by walking in the landscape, he brought a great increase in scale and space, and the dimension of time, as well as rich conceptual potential, to a work of art. He also found the freedom to make sculptures along the way in the reality of the different land surfaces which cover the planet. As well as the medium of walking, Richard Long uses the basic elements of the natural world - stones, mud and water, usually in the simple and poetic form of lines and circles. He has made works in the landscapes of all the continents except Antarctica, and since 1968 he has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, from Reykjavik to Kyoro. Teresa Bjornson and Jerry Sohn of Children's Library Press in Venice, California, invited Richard Long to create a book that, in its spirit and in its execution, would appeal to children as well as adults. A Walk Across England is Richard Long's beautiful and poetic answer to this request.
