This collection of short non-fiction tales are in the most part entertaining.

The book concentrates on relationships between nobles of France, and of Russia.

I'm not sure how accurate all these are, as Madame du Barry's story ends differently to every other version I've read, including contemporary sources. That is, she's reported to have not gone quietly to the guillotine, whereas according to Hall, she went along peacefully because of a broken heart.

Therefore, I suspect the author of making a change to create a more romantic ending. Could be that I'm doing him a wrong in that he didn't have access to the correct info, or that he had incorrect material to work from. Whatever the case, this book was still worth a read.
