Mr. Groundhog tries to give his Groundhog Day duties away. He does not want to be blamed for six more weeks of winter anymore. He asks his friends to take on the responsibilities, but they are not interested. Instead, one by one his friends show him how he is perfectly suited to the role.
What is a groundhog to do if he is deemed to be the villain almost every February 2? If you are Mr. Groundhog and keep seeing your shadow you ask Mrs. Rabbit, Mr. Turtle, Mrs. Squirrel, and Mrs. Raccoon to do your once a year duty. Unfortunately for Mr. Groundhog, they all refuse to do his job but assist him by providing him with a vest, hat, cane, and bow. At the end of the story, Mr. Groundhog has the attire for the day and makes the most of it by dancing and having fun. In this bilingual book, Spanish and English readers will enjoy the repeated pleas from Mr. Groundhog as he tries to get out of his anticipated duty. The translations are suitable for English and Spanish readers. The illustrations are whimsical and entertaining. This bilingual book would be a welcome addition to a bilingual classroom or as a read aloud for Groundhog Day. Reviewer: Rosa Roberts
