The Spoke: A Sergeant Studer Mystery Book

Sgt Studer is one of my all-time favorite detectives! Glauser's ability to write across time is amazing. I still can't get my head around the fact that his series from the 1930s is a riveting read in 2018. Somehow, he figured out how to write timelessly.

I only wish that there were more books in this phenomenal series. This book #5 returns to the caliber of book #1 and #2 in the series. But I am truly sad to have come to the end of the line with Sgt Studer.

My favorite excerpt from this book (p69), is where Studer is reunited with his [crying] childhood sweetheart and finds himself comparing her to his wife, Hedy:
"So there he was, a man who'd devoted his whole life to the so-called science of criminology. What use was it? Now? Sitting next to a woman in tears? The first requirement of science was to ask questions and the second to be objective. Objective? Put simply, that meant uninvolved. But how did these scientific gentlemen do that, remain uninvolved when your childhood suddenly came back to you and you saw your old classroom again, the way home and your mother? There'd been a lime tree behind his father's house too, and in the summer a high ladder was placed up against it and a boy and a girl had picked lime blossom. And now? Now he was an old man. Hedy has been a good wife to him; the only thing he might say against her was that he hadn't picked lime blossom with *her* but with another girl."
