During the Quattrocento, from 1400-1500, a variety of painting developed which had never been seen before and addressed a turning point in the history of art; painted cassone or marriage chests were decorated with exotic stories and symbols, featuring the first ever painting with a secular subject base and to be commissioned outside the church . These Cassoni, were generally commissioned by noblemen or bankers to celebrate family weddings, and were painted by such great masters as Uccello, Botticelli, Mantegna and Filippino Lippi. This is the first book to be devoted to the Cassoni chest and discuss their relevance to art history. The text illuminates the processes of the opulent Florentine marriage ceremony; recounts the stories depicted on the Cassoni and also discusses the parallel art forms of the desco da parta or birth tray, commissioned to celebrate births. The stunning illustrations present complete Cassoni fronts, many of which are shown for the first time, offering a unique and enchanting expression of the exuberance which lay at the heart of the Renaissance.
