For the addicted person whose attachment hunger is keeping him or her in a detrimental relationship too long, there are survival stories from Halpern’s patients, exercises to identify the roots of attachment hunger, and strategies for extricating oneself from an addictive relationship and moving on to healthier attachments. For the psychotherapist, there are convicting cautions about getting too attached to patients. For the relationship researcher, there are clear descriptions of addictive love and what happens to the infant within when those bonds are threatened. It’s a book that should be read multiple times, in multiple stages of one’s life when helping a friend through an addictive relationship, writing about others in said relationships, or perhaps realizing that you’re in one yourself.
