A young boy is delighted with his unusual birthday present, especially when it helps him do things such as toast marshmallows.
On the thirtieth anniversary of its original publication, Margaret Hillert's Happy Birthday, Dear Dragon has been re-released. In addition to the original text, Shannon Cannon, a literacy consultant, has added a note to caregivers about reading with young children, as well as connections to the key components of reading instruction identified by the National Reading Panel. Although the original illustrations are a bit like old-fashioned cartoons and the text reminiscent of Dick and Jane in its limited vocabulary, this book is suitable for kindergarten and first grade readers. Children will enjoy the antics of the dragon and the surprises on the latter pages that show what Dear Dragon can do, plus the fact that they will be able to read this book on their own with just a bit of help.
