My Life with George Book

I listened to this on audiobook. I would have liked this book much more if it weren't for a few things...Firstly, why did the author feel the need to purchase a breed dog for her son? Surely, going to a shelter and adopting a puppy there or an adult dog, would have been a much better thing to do for the sake of the dog, and setting an example of compassion for her son. Instead, she purchased a dog from a breeder and so encouraging them to further breed whilst other dogs are put to death for sheer lack of a home to go to. If she was that keen on a dog of that breed, perhaps there was a breed specific rescue group for them that she could have contacted. To top it off, she chose a breed that is notoriously inbred and suffers from a multitude of health problems, which was certainly the case with George.
The other thing that grated at my nerves throughout this book, was the author's amazing lack of insight and understanding of other people - especially men. She seemed to go from one unsuitable man to the next. I was dumbfounded with the story of the first man she dated after becoming a widow - the one who had taken his daughters' cat, whom he didn't like, drove a distance from their home and dumped. The cat found its way back home, worse for wear and get this - the author found the story funny. The simple fact that she chooses to retell it AND stays with this man after he told her about it, just left me feeling appalled. Would the story have been as 'funny' is the cat had not made it home?
Then there is the American professor she dates for a few years, despite him pretty much hating George. The incident where she loses George in the park and it begins to rain and he refuses to help her look for him and keeps saying "He is ONLY a dog", left me aghast. She then breaks up with him very soon after that....AND THEN GETS BACK TOGETHER WITH HIM! Sorry, but even if my partner was not a fan of my animal companion, I would expect him to understand how much the animal meant to me and show some concern and compassion for me and help me find the dog! I found his lack of support in that incident to me quite callous towards George and towards her. Why do women put up with that kinda of treatment? Lack of self esteem? Do they not think they deserve better?
And one last gripe : Monster Mog. The author already had a cat before she got George. And she knew the cat was of the type that would most likely NOT tolerate interlopers and yet she still got a dog. When the inevitable happened and the situation at home became bad because the cat and George were not getting on, she 'solved' the situation by getting rid of the cat - the one that had been there first.
All in all, this book annoyed me too many times for me to actually enjoy it.
