Pierre the Penguin Book

1. Fiction Twin Text: Title: Where is Home Little Pip?, Author: Karma Wilson, Copyright: 2008
2. Rationale: These books are both about penguins who are in need of something and missing something in their lives. Where is Home Little Pip, extends the book Pierre the Penguin because it is about a penguin who lives in the cold Arctic while Pierre is an African penguin and lives in warm climates. Pierre needs help growing feathers and fitting in with his peers at the zoo. Pip wanders away from home and needs help finding his parents and his home.
3. Text Structure/Strategy: The main text structure of Pierre the Penguin uses problem and solution by showing Pierre's problem of being cold, brayed at by other penguins and that he cannot grow feathers or swim with the others. I would use the content reading strategy of making inferences and drawing conclusions from the texts, as to what might help Pierre and Pip? What do they think Pam will do to help Pierre? What will Pip do when he is lost? What do you do if you are lost? They would also use their background knowledge to build on what they already know to draw conclusions from their own knowledge and skills.
