I Call My Grandpa Papa Book

I Call My Grandpa Papa is such a delightful children's book that I cannot wait to share with my future students. I really enjoyed the rhyming of the words; it is simple, yet adds a great deal to the text. The format of the text and use of rhymes make it a perfect choice for a read-aloud. The illustrations draw the eye of the reader as they stretch across the page and use lines to clearly show movement. This book would be well-suited to read aloud for enrichment. It helps to introduce to young children the concept of different languages in a simple way. It also guides student's understandings that cultures that seem very different from our own, may ultimately be quite similar. Presenting multiculturalism to children in regards to family helps in comprehension, because family is central to all of their lives. Practically every page features a new name for "grandpa" based on the different cultures of the students in the story. Students will enjoy discussing the glossary at the end of the text that lists what language each name comes from.
