Maritime researcher Butler takes on the history of the Cunard Line from its modest start in 1840 through its glamour days as the first and last great transatlantic service. The work includes many photos of ships, ships, ships, and indeed the ships are the main protagonists of the narrative, though subplots such as the mores of ocean travel and the dangers of wartime crossings also receive attention. The history takes the line right up to its modern reinvention as a purveyor of tourists' fantasies with the 2004 launch of the Queen Mary 2, the world's longest ocean liner. A must read! Butler's writing talent shines as he brings 160 years of a legend to the reader in a hard-to-put-down book. This book reads as if it were a novel and it reminds me of a James A. Michener piece.
