Chinese New Year (On My Own Holidays Series) Book

In this graphic novel children can learn all there is about the Chinese New Year. The book goes into detail about the celebration and breaks it down into four chapters, introducing the holiday, the preparation before the New Year, what happens on the first day, and what happens on the last day of the celebration. This organization is helpful for young readers and who are transitioning to chapter books. Chin's illustrations really capture the excitement and detail of the holiday. They do a good job supporting the text and giving a better understanding to the holiday and what it all entails. The illustrations, I feel, are very appropriate and stick to the Chinese esthetic, especially when they talk about the Kitchen God. I like that the book is interactive to the reader and includes a glossary as well. I would have this book in my classroom library because I feel it discusses an interesting topic that my students, whether they celebrate the Chinese New Year or not, will enjoy and find engaging. Making my students understanding of the world they live in is very important to me and I think that this book is a great tool to learn about people who are different then us.
