Decades of failure in school by African American students has resulted in generations of alienated adolescents, high unemployment, and many other social and physical difficulties. Dr. Simpkins presents this argument straightforwardly and with great cogency, bringing to our awareness the tragedy this failure has created in the lives of large numbers of African Americans. Simpkins particularly attends to the consequences of the failure of literacy and presents radical programs which can encourage these students to learn to read more effectively and with great positive benefits to their school situation and overall reading skills.
