On Sea Lion's first birthday, he leaves his rookery in the Channel Islands to make the long journey to San Francisco Harbor, during which he becomes entangled in a net and ...
PreS-Gr 2--A simple story of a sea lion's first few months alone without his mother after his first birthday is brought to life with sound effects and the gentle pacing and tone of the male narrator. Listeners hear waves and splashes of the water, calls of the birds and sea lions, and some human sounds. These are used to tell the story of a sea lion looking for a new place, but almost finding tragedy when part of an old fishing net gets wrapped around his neck. He is found in the San Francisco Harbor and nursed back to health. After his release, he goes back to the harbor. The sea lion is not humanized, and the story is written from his point of view. The end includes some lifestyle information about sea lions. This package could provide additional information for reports. Teachers could use this to introduce a unit on sea mammals or ecology, or students could use it individually as a read-along or as a source for a report on sea lions. The print in the book is large and the illustrations are colorful. A good choice for libraries with a need for quality wildlife book/tape sets.--Ann West LaPrise, Detroit Public Library, MI
