With her novel's structure, Ashour pays tribute to the Arab qareen (double or companion, and sometimes demon) and the ancient Egyptian ka (the spirit that is born with and accompanies an individual through life and beyond).

تقول د. رضوى عاشور أنها بدأت الأمر بشجر.. التي ولدت ÙÙŠ Ù†Ùس يوم ولادة د. رضوى Ùˆ ÙÙŠ Ù†Ùس المنطقة السكنية Ùˆ لولا أنها شخصية من ÙˆØÙŠ الأدب لكانتا التقيتا على سلم كلية الآداب أو ÙÙŠ الØرم الجامعي..
أردات د. رضوى أن تكتب عن شجر.. أن تضع Ùيها جزءًا من روØها. لكن رضوى أبت Ùˆ قررت أن تطل بشØمها Ùˆ Ù„Øمها Ùˆ أن تÙكتب هي الأخرى Ù„ØªØµØ¨Ø Ù‡Ø°Ù‡ الرواية نوعًا جديدًا من أدب السيّر الذاتية. ضÙرت Ùيها رضوى الØقيقة بالخيال. تØدثت عن Ù†Ùسها دون مواربة ÙÙŠ Ùصول رضوى Ùˆ سكبت بعضًا من روØها ÙÙŠ Ùصول شجر.
عرÙتني بها أكثر. أخبرتني عن تÙاصيل لم أكن أعلمها. أوصلتني ببعض الØلقات المÙقودة التي كنت٠قد قرأت عنها من قبل Ùˆ لم أستوضØها. Ùˆ كعادتها , دست الØقائق التاريخية Ùˆ Øدثتنا عبر شجر عن مذبØØ© دير ياسين Ùˆ تØدثت هي كـ رضوى عن صبرا Ùˆ شاتيلا التي عايشتها. Ùˆ عن أنها Øين كتبت غرناطة لم تكن تكتب كما ظن البعض عن Ùلسطين بل عن خوÙها الشديد إزاء Øرب الخليج.
أخبرتني عن إجابة السؤال الذي سألته لاØقا ÙÙŠ الطنطورية :"كي٠اØتملنا Ùˆ عشنا Ùˆ انزلقت شربة الماء من الØلق دون أن نشرق بها Ùˆ نختنق؟" Ùˆ قالت : الإنسان يراوغ ليواصل !
بقى لي أن أسألها عن Øازم ÙÙŠ Ùرج Ùˆ يوس٠ÙÙŠ أطياÙ. رÙيقي الدرب اللذين قضيا تØت وطأة مرارة النكسة. نكسة المباديء Ùˆ نكسة يونيو التي تطل برأسها Ø§Ù„Ù‚Ø¨ÙŠØ Ø¯ÙˆÙ† أن ÙŠÙذكر اسمها.
