Lillian's Fish Book

One day, swimming in a shallow pool, Lillian's very bold fish turns somersaults in the air and lands in the neighboring stream. As the little fish swims away, to the extreme dismay of Lillian, her seven brothers, and their other animals, a decision is made to find the lost pet, no matter what it takes.

"Long ago and far away lived a little girl named Lillian who lived in a large house with her father and mother, her aunt and uncle, and her seven brothers." So begins this engaging chapter book describing a sanely zany family at home at Four Corners Farm. Within this household reside the seven pets of the seven brothers, to which is added Lillian's Fish. The fish's arrival and disappearance provide the structure for a fabric of discovery and friendship. The story unfolds as we share the unified efforts of the other seven pets as they journey downstream to find the missing member of their very special kinship group. Though Menk does not name these animals, he does provide enough anthropomorphic and natural detail to enable the reader to establish an adequate persona for each creature. The black and white art enlivens the pages. The full color jacket is skillfully designed with a light-reflective process to feature the fish and her art deco waves.
