Mimí becomes frustrated as she tries to explain to her classmates that a parranda is the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling. Her frustration subsides when she remembers that she will spend Christmas in Puerto Rico with her extended family, but when she is later told that they will not be going to Puerto Rico this year, Mimí becomes quiet and withdrawn. Just as she thinks that her dreams of a parranda are over, Mimí's school friends surprise her. Sosa's mixed-media illustrations-which depict children from different ethnic backgrounds-perfectly complement Gil's festive writing, bringing this colorful story of music, family, and food to life.
