If you want to be accepted and respected, you have to be like .everybody else. That's what some people think. Despite this opinion, the young people in these stories gain the respect of others by sharing their unique experiences and talents.

The children in The Ice Dove and Other Stories, by Diane de Anda, learn to take pride in themselves and to appreciate the gifts their families, community and culture have given them. It is through the love and support of their families and neighbors, the ability to create beautiful things from simple materials, even from the ice itself, that they almost magically find out how special they are.

The young boy in "Something Special" Struggles with whether to share his family traditions and culture with his classmates while the young boy in "Pinto" deals with classmates' ridicule because he is biethnic. The young girl in "The Ice Dove" and the children in "The Christmas Spirit Tree" learn that faith and trust in the special relationships they have with the adults in their family and community can turn loss and disappointment into a hopeful and happy new beginning.

And if they feel different from the other children, this only makes them more special. They can see things from a different point of view ... they have a special knowledge.

Children's Literature

The children are Hispanic, but the book deals with problems faced by children everywhere. Quite young children can identify with the girl who doesn't understand why her dove made of ice can't be stored under her bed. But it takes a special wisdom to heat the water from the dove until it steams, and then tell the child that the steam is the spirit of the dove. When the stories deal with prejudice, the children are able to deal with nasty classmates, unthinking adults, and sheer meanness with the help of their parents and beloved grandparents. These children are special, and so are their stories.
